Worldwide Development of Organic Cotton Textiles

Organic cotton refers to cotton that is naturally cultivated without using chemical fertilizer, pesticide and transgenic technology. It is beneficiary to human health and environment protection. Organic cotton needs to be certified by related organizations or authorities before it can be called organic cotton. At present, Turkey and other more than 20 countries and regions grow organic cotton with an annual output covering about 0.03 % of the world total cotton production. The per unit area yield of organic cotton is 14 % 〜 33 % lower than that of traditional cotton, but the global demand is increasing. From 2003 to 2005, the sales of organic cotton increased from US$ 300 million to 900 million and it is expected to reach US$ 2 billion in 2007.
