The latest customs statistics showed that China imported 194.3 ten thousand tons of cotton at a value of 3.24 billion US dollars by the end of November 2008, down 9.1% and 8.6% year-on-year in terms of volume and value respectively, with the average imported price of US$ 1666 per ton, growing 19.4% from the last comparable period in 2007. Cotton exported from America totaled 88.4 ten thousand tons which registered a sharp decline of 16.7 percent; while India sold 57 ten thousand tons to China with a year-on-year increase of 27.8 percent. Taken together, the cotton import from that two countries covered 74.9 percent of the total. Shandong, Jiangsu and Shanghai were the top 3 importers, together accounting for 66.1% of the total import volume, in which, cotton imported by Shandong amounted to 79 ten thousand tons, up 4.6% year-on-year; imported by Jiangsu amounted to 30.6 ten thousand tons, down 20.8%; Shanghai, 18.8 ten thousand tons, down 8.4%.
