US apparel imports from China surged in the first half this year in a large number of categories, according to preliminary data in volume terms. Where quotas are not imposed, China’s share is often approaching 50%, as reflected by our series of tables. India is resisting in a few categories but losing ground with cotton woven shirts, for instance. Imports from Vietnam are far from surging with no serious threat in sight for US textile industry as a result.
