U.S. Textile/Apparel Imports Expand Over 5 Percent in July (09/14/2007)

U.S. textile and apparel imports totaled 9.113 billion U.S. dollars in July, which reflected 5.3 percent year-on-year growth, while import volume increased 5.2 percent to 4.790 billion square meters. Imports from China grew 25.5 percent to 3.289 billion U.S. dollars; Mexico remained the second largest supplier in value terms, but imports fell 14 percent to 516.6 million U.S. dollars; and imports from Vietnam surged 46.2 percent to 468.956 million U.S. dollars, making it the third largest supplier. In volume terms, imports increased 45.6 percent to 142.2 million square meters, with Vietnam the seventh largest supplier.

July´s actual import volume declined from seven of the top ten suppliers, with only China, Vietnam and Honduras experiencing an increase in import volume. It was also very interesting to note that in value terms, imports from Italy surged 12.4 percent in July, reaching 258.85 million U.S. dollars; while in quantity terms, imports grew 9.2 percent to 35.068 million square meters, all of which resulted in Italy becoming the eighth largest supplier.
