In October, China´s retail sales increased 18.1 percent to 826.3 billion yuan, up from 17.0 percent growth in September and the highest level in eight years. The most significant factor was that three product groups, apparel, electronics and automobiles, drove sales growth, with each increasing over 30 percent year-on-year. Apparel sales surged 33 percent from year-ago levels, driven by very aggressive pricing that tapped increased consumer incomes. Another factor in retail sales growth is the high inflation in food products, with October sales of meat, poultry, eggs, grain and edible oil surging over 45 percent due to rising prices.
