Major breakthrough of high-temperature resistant fiber (10/10/2009)

High-temperature resistant fiber can be categorized as one major type of hi-tech fiber which technically means they could withstand over 180℃ without primary physical or mechanical performance decline. High-temperature resistant fiber is characterized in some features including: excellent dimensional stability under high temperature; high softening or melting point; flame retardant or nonflammable with high thermolysis temperature; steady performance under extended high temperature conditions; regular fiber processability, moderate softness and elasticity. High-temperature resistant fiber can also be classified into inorganic and organic. China in recent years has successfully realized the industrialization and nationalization of PMIA fiber (meta-aramid fiber) and PPS fiber(polyphenylene sulfide fiber), two major types of organic high-temperature resistant fibers.

PPS fiber was developed since after twentieth century featuring excellent thermal stability, remarkable performance under chemical corrosion and good flame retardancy as well as outstanding dimensional stability. Its chemical corrosion performance is precede only by PTFE fiber and more exceptional than some special fibers such as meta-aramid, PI. Its availability therefore drew the spotlight of relative industries and soon highlighted as premium choice for tail gas or MSW incineration dust removal filtration materials. In the meantime, PPS fiber products also became prevalent in other arenas, filtration material in Chlor-alkali Industry, coating material in electronic industry, insulating material, high-temperature resistant and flame-retardant material in aviation industry, to name a few. Consumption of PPS fiber grows year by year. Nonetheless, developed countries have in the long time monopolized on technological application of PPS fiber and this technology blockade leaving developing countries no alternatives but to import over-priced fiber products from abroad.

To break up the technological blockade from abroad, China Textile Academy in tandem with Sichuan Deyang technology Co., ltd. successfully made substantial breakthrough in the nationalization and complete engineering technology of PPS fiber after years of research and development. A manufacturing line was accomplished in Deyang, Sichuan province, with production capacity of over 4000 tons of PPS staple fiber and 1000 tons of PPS filament fiber per year which successfully realized the industrialization of PPS fiber and filled a new technology blank thereafter. Part of the products’ performances has outperformanced similar international products and the overall manufacturing line is also reaching international level.

Meta-aramid is a type of organic fiber with exceptional integrated high-temperature performance featuring outstanding physical performance and is now widely used in high-temperature protective clothing, fire fighting clothing, special military garments and other ornamental flame-retardant materials. Yantai Spandex Co., ltd. successfully developed meta-aramid fiber by introducing and absorbing offshore advanced technologies. Its products can now widely replace imported products although there is still way to go for the? high-temperature protective clothing material performance. Yantai Spandex based on its current technology built a 1,500 tons of meta-aramid staple fiber manufacturing line specially to satisfy the high-temperature protective clothing fiber need. The successful running of this manufacturing line could to a large extent satisfy the quick domestic marketing demand growth and have a monumental meaning to many industries.
