Updated: 11/10/2009 10:17:00 AM

Philippine Textile Research Institute (PRTI) has recently developed an array of pretreatment methods that could be used to process abaca fiber, banana fiber and pineapple fiber. These methods is said to bring down 35% of the original manufacturing cost as well as simultaneously improving the fiber quality.

Fiber degumming could lower the vegetable gum content making fibers more suitable for spinning. Dr. Carlos C. Tomboc, president of PRTI said fiber degumming technology will directly enhance the fiber competitive edge by reducing 20-35% of manufacturing cost.
