Operating Performance: Textile Industry 2010 Spring Report (03/29/2010)

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the operating performance of textile industry in the whole year of 2009. Consolidated output value of the whole industry rose by 9.1% as compared with the year 2008 with growth magnitude down by 1.2 percentage points. Amongst all major products, yarn output reached 23.94 million tons, fabric output reached 74 billion meters, and chemical fiber output 27.3 million tons, respectively increased by 12.7%, 4.2% and 13% year on year. The output value of textile industry for the first two months of 2010 upturned 13.4% compared with the same period of last year. The output of yarns, fabrics, chemical fiber respectively rose by 26.6%, 51.2% and 17.1% compared with the first two months of 2009.

International market share maintained stable.Over 39% of textiles and apparel products in the USA and 78.6% in Japan were manufactured in China last year. Since after October last year, offshore orders increased substantially and culminated quick recovery of export.

Industry upgrade kept accelerating.In the year 2009, domestically made textile machinery took up 75% of overall market share, which is five percentage points higher than last year. Differential chemical fiber vatio rose to 40%, also five percentage points higher compared with last year. Over 1.37 million tons of obsolete chemical fiber capacity were eliminated and over half of outdated dyeing and printing machinery were eliminated in the neighborhood of Tai lake area.

Capacity control and obsolete capacity eliminating work remain arduous.Textile fibers processed in China accounted for as much as 50% of global fiber consumption. The unexpected global economic downturn hammered China textile industry hard, plus the weakened international market demand. The excessive capacity issue are becoming more and more protruding.
