Nomadic Cultures Inspire Spinners for Spring/Summer 2014 (01/17/2013)

The influence of simpler, nomadic lifestyles and wandering cultures is evident in the spinners’ offerings this season, expressing a preference for raw materials culled from the traditional Silk Route and other melting pots.

At Ningbo Consinee Group, new blends of silk and cashmere are appropriately named: Samarkand, Bhutan, and Kashgar. “Linen blends, Luxor and Giza, reflect exotic and mystical Egypt; while bamboo blends Jimbaran and Seminyak bring to mind the craftsmanship and spirituality of Bali; and our pure silks, Ginza and Kyoto, mirror the purity and minimalism of the Japanese aesthetic,” explains Jane Sked, the company’s designer.

Silk is also at the heart of Cariaggi’s Bon Voyage story, a “voyage of discovery that takes us back to the wonderful landscapes of the Silk Route.”

Filpucci’s Nomads collection incorporates fine gauge linen with cotton or silk; while casual tapes and rag yarns in natural cotton blends evoke Gauguin’s Route, according to Sergio Locoli, General Manager Filpucci Zhangjiagang.

At Yarns & Colors, Spring/Summer 2014 takes its direction from gypsies and modern-day nomads, with materials such as jute, ramie, and festive colored silks.

This all reflects the demand SPINEXPO™ marketing team is registering from visitors coming to the show. Brands have already expressed their needs for the coming season and will come to the fair looking for nep, loop and fancy yarns, linen yarns with a smooth hand feel, or silk/cotton Taiwan style, silk/cashmere and mulberry silk yarns. They also mention a need for yarns with a dry hand, such as Japanese Maruisho Hotta type of yarns, bright silk cotton, viscose/paper and viscose cotton.
