According to the Hubei Agriculture Bureau, spring cotton acreage is expected to be about 420,000 ha, which would be approximately the same as the previous year. This varies with the recent NCMMS field survey, which determined spring acreage would increase about 6 percent to 433,333 ha due to better-than-expected income from seed cotton prices in 2007. Xiaogan, a key cotton district just north of the provincial capital, Wuhan, is expected to plant 26,666 ha of cotton in 2008. 2007 output for Xiaogan totaled 35,300 tons. Early indications from another major Hubei cotton area, Qianjiang, which borders the Yangtze River, predict cotton acreage to be flat or down slightly.
